Tardigrades

Phylum Tardigrada

Eight-legged micro-animals, typically 0.3–0.5 mm. Found in moss, lichen, marine sediment, and essentially everywhere else. In the tun state — a desiccated, metabolically arrested form — they withstand vacuum, 6,000 atmospheres of pressure, doses of radiation lethal to most animals, and decades without water. Rehydration restores normal function within hours.

Bdelloid rotifers

Class Bdelloidea

Microscopic filter feeders that have reproduced asexually for tens of millions of years. Their desiccated forms accumulate DNA double-strand breaks during drying and repair them upon rehydration. A specimen recovered from 24,000-year-old permafrost resumed reproduction after thawing.
